Organisation of final-year dissertation defences

Announcement

 

With regard to the organisation of final-year dissertation defences, the Faculty Management announces the following:

In accordance with Circular No. 0650/N.J.J.S/2026, issued by the Regional College of Eastern Universities, attached to the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and relating to the organisation of final thesis defences, here is a detailed summary of the prohibitions and instructions contained therein:

Firstly: prohibitions (activities prohibited on the university campus)

It is strictly forbidden to engage in the following activities so as not to disrupt the smooth running of the teaching process:

Festive events: it is forbidden to organise any noisy festive events within university premises.

   Distribution of sweets and confectionery: it is prohibited to distribute sweets or organise receptions on the occasion of thesis defences.

    Use of fireworks: the use of fireworks is strictly prohibited on the university campus.

   Illegal and profit-making commercial activities: it is strictly forbidden to engage in any illegal profit-making commercial activity within the university. The document cites the following examples in particular:

    Renting out graduation gowns on campus.

    Commercial photography services on campus.

Secondly: Recommendations and guidance

The document contains a series of recommendations for heads of higher education institutions:

    Ensuring an academic atmosphere: emphasise that discussions regarding final dissertations are, above all, ‘meetings to assess students’ work’, and that each institution must ensure a healthy and calm academic atmosphere in which this work can be carried out without disruption.

    Maintaining safety and security: take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of people and property within university premises.

    Protecting other teaching activities: ensure that exams, marking sessions and other teaching activities taking place at the same time are not disrupted.

    Compliance with previous instructions: it is imperative to comply with previous instructions and circulars relating to the smooth running of the university environment, prevention and safety (in particular the circulars published in 2022 and 2024).
